NBA MOURNS THE LOSS OF BROTHER DR. GEORGE A PATTERSON (1942 - 2022)
Brother Dr. Geroge A. Patterson was a life member of our noble fraternity and was initiated at Elizabeth City State University, the Epsilon Alpha chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated, in 1961.
He had been a member of New Brunswick Alumni chapter for nearly all of the chapter’s 40+ years. During his tenure with the chapter he served as the chapter Polemarch, Vice-Polemarch and as a member of Board of Directors. He was always the voice of reason for our chapter and made sure New Brunswick Alumni demonstrated excellence in every endeavor. If anyone would ask why, his notable response was always the same, “because that’s what Kappa men do.”
In honor of his commitment to excellence and dedication to the chapter and fraternity, the Diamond Foundation, Inc., the philanthropic arm of the New Brunswick Alumni Chapter, named their annual scholarship luncheon after him. The Dr. George A. Patterson Scholarship Luncheon for nearly 20 years has been an event used to recognize the accomplishments of graduating high school seniors in our area.
Brother Patterson will be missed but the impact and legacy he has left behind will continue to benefit brothers and their communities for many years to come.
NBA NUPES AND NBA KL HONOR REV. DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR.
The Brothers of the New Brunswick Alumni Chapter and the young men of the New Brunswick Alumni Kappa League did something special this year for the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. They prepared a video recording of his iconic I Have A Dream speech. We often see the same video clips with the same words over and over again. But when was the last time you read or listened to the entire speech? When did you hear Dr. King's entire message to the nation. Given that many of the same issues exist in our society today, we felt it important to share the entire speech with our young men and reflect on how Dr. King's dream resonates today.
NBA NUPES AND NBA KL SERVE THOSE IN NEED FOR THANKSGIVING
The Brothers of the New Brunswick Alumni Chapter, the young men of the New Brunswick Alumni Kappa League partnered with the Franklin Food Bank to assist families in need for Thanksgiving. The chapters established an Everything But the Turkey food drive which provided all of the side dishes for a traditional Thanksgiving dinner. Families donated bags of food. We set out to provide 24 bags of food and collected over 170. What a tremendous effort on everyone's behalf. Under the leadership of the Social Action Committee Chairman, Brother Marcus Williams III, the food was sorted and delivered to the Franklin Food Bank. We collected over 1400 lbs of food which translates to helping over 1600 people in our local community.
In addition to the food drive, the Franklin Food Bank needed assistance with one of the their largest fundraising programs. NBA Kappa Leaguers volunteered their time to help sort, package, label and stuff envelopes for their community fundraiser. Over 10,000 envelopes needed to be sent out. In two days of volunteering roughly 4,00 envelopes were ready for mailing.
