NBA HOSTS 4th annual DIAMOND 5K RUN
On Saturday, September 14th, New Brunswick Alumni hosted its 4th annual Diamond 5K event at Buccleuch Park in New Brunswick, NJ. The event raises funds for the chapter to support community service events and the programming of the New Brunswick Alumni Kappa League. This year we had volunteers from NBA, as well as the assistance of our Kappa Leaguers. We were also blessed to be assisted by the recruits of the New Brunswick Fire Department. The weather was perfect for 50 runner/walkers who participated in the event.
ETA EPSILON CELEBRATES ITS
45 YEAR CHAPTER ANNIVERSARY
On Saturday, November 16th, there was a historic gathering at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in New Brunswick, NJ. Brothers traveled from as far as California to return home to celebrate 45 years of the Eta Epsilon Chapter at Rutgers University (New Brunswick campus). The chapter was chartered on March 9, 1974. Kappa Alpha Psi was the first historically Black Greek-letter organization on Rutgers campus. The initial line to become Kappas, were initiated into the Delta Eta Chapter at the University of Pennsylvania, which today is known as the Philadelphia city chapter encompassing numerous universities in the Philadelphia area. The charter members collectively known as the ZODIACS were initiated in the Spring of 1973. The line consisted of
Sam Deberry
Bruce Smallwood
Marvin Braker
Derrick Hopson
John Cole Jr.
Walter Patterson
Charles L. McRae
Returning to campus, they immediately drew the interest of other young men on campus. In the fall of 1973, the next line was initiated thus providing the chapter with enough members for a national charter. Eta Epsilon was the second chapter chartered in New Jersey.
On this special evening, over 80 Brothers gathered to share the chapter's rich history. The charter members shared their experiences on Rutgers campus in 1972. They reminisced about the environment at that time, the obstacles they encountered and how Kappas arrival paved the way for the other historically Black-Greek letter organizations on campus. Brothers shared stories, caught up on time passed and in many instances introduced themselves to members of the chapter they had never met.
The room was filled with the Bond as Brothers from Iota Epsilon, Eta Delta, Delta Beta, New Brunswick Alumni, Maplewood Oranges Alumni, Jersey City Alumni, Willingboro/Ft. Dix Alumni and Plainfield Alumni chapters were present. And no Kappa event is complete without our beloved songs. Eta Epsilon's last line was in 2012. With the help of NBA, we hope to have the chapter active again in the upcoming years.
