WHAT IS KAPPA LEAGUE?

The Kappa League Program is a part of the National Guide Right Program of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. It serves as a mechanism for undergraduate and graduate members of the Fraternity to serves as mentors and leaders within their local communities.

Under the chairmanship of Mel Davis, the Los Angeles Alumni Chapter’s Social Action Program took the form of training activity for young men of the Alain Leroy Locke High School.  It was called the Kappa Instructional Leadership League. Called the Kappa Instructional Leadership League, it was designed to help young men grow, receive, and develop their leadership talents in every phase of human endeavor. It provided both challenging and rewarding experiences, which richly enhanced their lives. Membership was open to male students from the tenth through the twelfth grades. The fraternity sought to help these young men to achieve worthy goals for themselves and make constructive contributions to their community when leadership roles become the responsibility.

Kappa League was founded on Thursday, February 12, 1969, by the Los Angeles Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., at Alain LeRoy Locke High School.  Kappa League was adopted by the Grand Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. at the 56th Grand Chapter which was held August 12-15, 1970.  The founders of the Kappa Instructional Leadership League were Mr. Mel L. Davis and Mr. Edgar H. Bishop.

OUR HISTORY

In 2004, the New Brunswick Alumni chapter formally introduced its Kappa Leadership League.  The program began with 16 African-American males primarily from Quibbletown Middle School.  Under the direction of the chapter Polemarch, Bryan Foston, and the Guide Right director, C. Alex Gray, the foundation for the program was developed.  In just under two years the program went from two schools to over ten schools spanning Middlesex and Somerset county middle and high schools.  The program focuses on leadership training, community service, mentoring, personal responsibility and academic enrichment.  The goal of the program is to help students set high and lofty goals and provide them with the tools, resources and skills to attain them and beyond.  Over our 15 year history, we have inducted over 250 young men into the program.  Our students have successfully matriculated and graduated from colleges and universities across the country.  We currently have 62 young men in our program spanning 22 local middle schools and high schools.
